So we're offering free classes to the public. Great idea. I'm all behind it. But the university decided to dump registration for it on my office. So we're registering our regular students on top of a thousand more people this quarter. Our office is a mad house. We cannot keep up with the calls. It doesn't help that the majority of people registering for the free classes are senior citizens. Nothing against that, I think it's absolutely great that they're taking the classes. But it takes us MUCH longer to explain things to them and get them registered than it does our regular students. We're taking 10-15 minutes a call for each of them. It's not fair to the paying students that cannot get through to us. What they need to do is get a few student assistants that can handle the calls for the free classes so we can be free to deal with the regular students.

What makes this worse, is that the free students are complaining now. They don't like the times classes are being offered. They don't like that we capped their class limit at 2 per quarter. They don't like the fact that the registration staff is not in charge of the free lectures being given by a different department.

It's FREE people! My fucking God! It's free classes that are being given by professors and staff that are willing to donate their time! What the hell is wrong with people?

Today I was kept on the phone for 20 minutes with some woman that was pissed I wasn't telling her the times the class was. It took me 10 minutes to get it across to her that there were 30 classes being offered, she had to specify what class she wanted before I could tell her the time. She insisted there was only one. She kept telling me she wanted to register for Bridges to the Future, the title of the entire program, and couldn't understand that wasn't a single class.

When I finally got through to her, she decided she didn't want it and then asked about the lectured offed by the other department. Refused to let me transfer her there. Then she tried to pick a fight with me over the title of the lecture.

Last week I got a woman that refused to give ou her phone number afer I pu her on a waitlis for a class. I asked her how she would like us to get ahold of her and she tells me we can mail her. I inform her that the waitlist is long, so we'd have to give her seat to another student if she didn't reply in 24 hours. She then rants at me that she is a tax payer and is entitled to the class. That's nice, but there are other tax payers on the list that gave their phone number. Next please.

Now someone called and told my co-worker she was a moron because she couldn't give him information on a speaker that is being sponsered by another department.

I'm getting very weary of being nice to the public that could give a shit about us.
