Happy Beltane, everyone. I've been told that heterosexual couples that do not want children just yet should obstain from sexual activity. You've been advised.

Other holidays today include May Day or Worker's Day, and the commemoration of the Haymarket Riot which occured May 1, 1886 in Chicago. There was a nation wide strike to limit work days to 8 hours a day. A mass meeting was held in the Chicago haymarket to protest a police action of the previous day in which workers were killed. When police ordered the protest meeting to disperse (peaceful though it was), a bomb was thrown by an unknown person, killing several officers. Every country in the world except the United States remembers this day.

Today's special word is: Merkin (brought to us today by my Latvian friend, Peteris)

In other news, I made two trial chaplets last night that both turned out great. Making the chains takes a rather long time and numbs the fingers. So I'm cool with a little bit of mark up ;) I'll take pictures and post soon.

Thanks for the heads up on today's historical significance. I'm always happy to get a bit of history.

And happy Beltane to you too, but shouldn't that warning have come a bit earlier since some folks are morning people!

And now for a stupid question: what does Merkin mean?

Well, I can't save them all ;)

As for Merkin - that's the word of the day that all people must look up on their own ;) It's not as fun if I explain it. And some might slap me.

For the record I did look it up before asking. I guess I just need a better dictionary. Or a Latvian one perhaps?
