Happy Beltane, everyone. I've been told that heterosexual couples that do not want children just yet should obstain from sexual activity. You've been advised.

Other holidays today include May Day or Worker's Day, and the commemoration of the Haymarket Riot which occured May 1, 1886 in Chicago. There was a nation wide strike to limit work days to 8 hours a day. A mass meeting was held in the Chicago haymarket to protest a police action of the previous day in which workers were killed. When police ordered the protest meeting to disperse (peaceful though it was), a bomb was thrown by an unknown person, killing several officers. Every country in the world except the United States remembers this day.

Today's special word is: Merkin (brought to us today by my Latvian friend, Peteris)

In other news, I made two trial chaplets last night that both turned out great. Making the chains takes a rather long time and numbs the fingers. So I'm cool with a little bit of mark up ;) I'll take pictures and post soon.

Yay chaplets! I can't wait to see.

Chains - did you not do cording then?

No, I don't have the cord yet or the little cord making tool (which looks suspiciously like a stick to me. . .). I still need to order all of that. I was just working with the supplies I have right now - which is rather limited. I wanted to see if I can do it. Now, making the chains is a bitch - I didn't even attempt wire wrapping - but it's also my first attempt, so maybe that will come easier as I go long. Also, the site I'm looking at claims their metal is easier to work with, so hopefully that's true.

Cord wise, I found a nifty step-by-step how-to on the internet. They have a rosary workshop online. Don't that beat all? I love the internet. . .

Thanks for the heads up on today's historical significance. I'm always happy to get a bit of history.

And happy Beltane to you too, but shouldn't that warning have come a bit earlier since some folks are morning people!

And now for a stupid question: what does Merkin mean?

Well, I can't save them all ;)

As for Merkin - that's the word of the day that all people must look up on their own ;) It's not as fun if I explain it. And some might slap me.

For the record I did look it up before asking. I guess I just need a better dictionary. Or a Latvian one perhaps?

See and I would have thought cord would have been a little easier for the do-it-yourself-er with no tools. Just goes to show how little I know.

Still, neat! I can't wait to see the pictures =)

You got me curious so I did an online search. Looks like there's a cording method that doesn't require a stick. It's here if you want to try.

Hey, thanks for the link =) Though for the cord rosaries the knots are a bit different. You only separate the Our Father beads with the knots - they resemble more of a coiled noose type know. But this is cool for different styles =) Thanks.

Well I know nothing about rosaries so I'll take your word for it on the knots. And glad I could help. I figure this way you don't have to wait for your special stick ;)
