Did you know that Alice Walker of The Color Purple fame was arrested on Saturday at the DC rally along with 20 other women authors and artists by DC police claiming the women didn't have a permit to be there. The women claimed they did have a permit. You can listen to a radio broadcast on that here: ALICE WALKER, MAXINE HONG KINGSTON. MEDEA BENJAMIN & 20 OTHER WOMEN ARRESTED OUTSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE: THOUSANDS GATHER IN WASHINGTON FOR CODE PINK PEACE DEMONSTRATION

Big shock, none of the mainstream media covered this story. . .

In other news, airport security is busy: CNN - TSA: More than 4.8 million items seized

Airport screeners have seized more than 4.8 million items -- including guns, knives, a kitchen sink pipe and a circular saw -- in the 13 months the federal government has been in charge of security.

You know, when I go to the airport I'm conscious of the type of shoes I wear and if my bra has an underwire that's going to set all the alarms off. I can't fathom what goes through (or doesn't go through) people's minds when they pack box cutters, knives and lead pipes. You might as well pack a few kilos in your tote and wear a T-shirt that reads "Crack smoking terrrorist for hire."

On the homefront, got a call from a new student today. Federal regulations state that we have to ask for ethnicity - not a question I like, but they have the option to say "Not Available" so I can go along with it. Anyway, this student answers "just normal". Now, last week I had one that replied "I'm regular." So you don't want decaf? You don't need metamucil? What were you trying to tell me here? My question to the readers here is what do you think goes on in the person's mind that thinks caucasian = normal/regular? Just to say that assumes that you think other ethnicities are not "normal" or "regular". I'm willing to go with clueless, as I don't think there was malicious intent with either student. But man . . . way to live in a vaccuum. =P

Actually the mainsteam media did cover the Alice Walker story -- it was a headline on CNN.com that very day. Can't say if was actually on air, but then again I spent Sunday biking and hanging out with friends. But I know I saw that story.

Hn. Well, they didn't bother to archive it then. I found out about the story on Monday from Democracy Now (http://www.democracynow.com) and when I went to CNN the story was nowhere to be seen. I just used the CNN search engine and nothing comes up for it.

Glad to hear that they did cover it, but a little mifted that it's been erased from the site. Though this isn't the first time CNN pulled coverage of story about protesters . . .

My Bad. . .

I didn't click on CNN.com - I left it on web search =P Sorry about that. Here's the article: Alice Walker Article (http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/03/08/sprj.irq.war.rallies/index.html)

LMAO! Good to see ignorance is still prevalent. Glad the last 100 years has totally passed some people by with just adding a part to their hair.

I heard about the Alice Walker thing. WOW! Noone is SAFE if you're protesting. Just forget it! Maybe protesters should just go ahead and wear handcuffs to rallies. Next thing...we'll have to protest the fact that we can't protest without being arrested or being shot at with tear gas and rubber bullets. Niiiiice.

(Grumbing) The Bush Reich uses the Constitution for toilet paper.

Yes I did hear about Alice Walker. The women's protest was covered by our local media, but then NYC hates Dubya and his cronies.

The Washington Post is saying that police are claiming that 'the arrests came after police reached agreement with protesters who wanted to be arrested.'
