There was a power outage that erased my last entry. Freak snow storm last night - all the powerlines are over burdened with a very wet snow. It's about 42 degrees now.

Some Animal Rights Activists - I'm getting very tired of the contingent out there that believe they can dictate which animals are okay to eat and which are not. I'm not talking about dolphins or monkeys, we're talking the difference of chicken, lamb and beef.

After class I got out to Pete's for a bite to eat. Pete's is a little Greek greasy spoon, not exactly the place a vegan goes for a meal. Anyway, some woman decided it was okay to heckle some poor guy for eating a lamb/beef gyros. Forgiving the fact that that's completely obnoxious for *anyone* to do to another person, this woman wasn't even a vegitarian. She was eating a plate of chicken fingers. The guy, who had enough class to ignore her, decided to move to the smoking section.

So, if we are to follow this woman - it's okay to eat *some* animals. And remember, we're at Pete's, so we're not talking free range chickens either.

Now, I'm not dissing animal rights activists - I'm one myself. I don't believe in using animals for research. I eat meat, but I try to just buy free range and keep my meat consumption down to 2-3 times a week. I've even tried to keep away from beef and pork, though that's more for health reasons, I confess. But my qualm comes with assholes who don't bother to think for themselves. What was it that made this woman think her eating chicken fingers made her superior to the man who was eating the gyros? Someone probably told her once that industrial farms are bad to cows (which they are, but what they do to chickens is actually worse) - or maybe she just thinks lambs are superior because they're cuter than chickens. The hypocrisy and cluelessness is staggering.

Reminds me of the time I was an undergrad and went out with a bunch of my friend's vegitarian friends who didn't include chicken in the meat category for some reason. We went for Chinese - they all got chicken dishes, even though there were plenty veggie dishes. I got the pork - they went wild. I'll forgive them for being 20. This woman was a 40 or a hard 30 something. No excuse.
