Okay, if you haven't seen this and want to, this little blurb has SPOILERS, so don't read.
Thanks to all those who replied. I finished the series last night. All in all, I really liked the series - made me feel all Cartesian - however, I hated the ending. It was setting everything up for, I don't know. . .something. Answers would have been nice, but I can live without those. I would have either liked to see the barriers break down between the real world and the Wired, or have learned more about Lain's role/place within the Wired. But what we got was a nice little reset button. I didn't want things to be all nice and safe and like nothing happened. Yeah, Lain removed herself from the world, so that altered things a little, but it was still wrapped up all neat and tight.
Of course it did show how powerful Lain really was that she could do that, but I have to wonder why she decided to leave the walls intact - was it simply to protect Arisu, or did she come to the realization that there should be a distinction between the Wired and the real world - and if so, why?
We got a lot of stuff thrown at us that the US was reponsible for the creation of the Wired: a wreckless endeavor which may or maynot have begun at Rosewell. I liked the conspiracy theory connecting all these problems with aliens and Americans. Think they were trying to make a statement?
And God wasn't really a God, he was the stand in for the real God - so who/what was the real God? Was it Lain? Which would be neat if Stand-in!God actually brough God to a manifestation and didn't even realize it - or maybe he did and that's why he wanted to control Lain. Or maybe there was no God at all.
Whatever the case, Lain gives us lots of food for though. So even if I didn't like the ending, the journey was one hell of a ride.
