So there's an opening in this department that would finally give me a chance to move up at the university. Pays a couple dollars more than I make right now, and right now in my life all the pennies count. As much as I don't want to work here any longer, I've had no luck finding another job over the past few months.

Problems with applying for this job: 1) co-worker who has been here longer and has been screwed over more times that I have is also applying for the job. She'd most likely be given preference over me out of seniority 2) the position would still leave me under the same boss I've been having problems with 3) While I can certainly do the job, not sure I really want to do the job. If it paid the average wage that most universities paid this position (about 5-10K more than what this pays), I'd probably go for it without reservation. But it seems I could be locking myself into a job I don't want, I'm over qualified for, for a boss I don't like and to top it off, it pays poor wages. 4) I've still got no faith that this job will be here in 2 years. All the numbers and figures I've seen still seem to say we're heading for disaster. It's so stupidly avoidable, I've got to ask myself why I'd work here a moment longer with these idiots.

I'm also at a disadvantage because I'm handling all the tech support and special projects. My job is too specialized now - if I leave, my boss has no one that can move into this position (hence all the trouble I've been having in terms of moving to a different department). Now, my current title is no where near what my job has morphed into. But if I demanded a title change to the job I'm actually doing, HR tells me they'd also have to pay me more. There's no money in the budget, so guess what?

Anyway, chances are I wouldn't get this job anyway because I'm needed right where I'm at.

So do I turn my resume in anyway?

It sounds, though like you don't *really* want the job. And it if it's only a "couple" more dollars than your current position, why bother?

You need to try and get out of the Uni! Get a job in Philly and come hang out with me. ;)

Huh. You sound fairly dissatisfied where you are. You seem to have a chance to get out, get more money, get away from a potentially suck situation. Take the chance - get out of Dodge.
