So I bought a computer today. This is good, as the laptop could not be fixed for under $300. Since the laptop is about 5 years old, I thought it'd be best to just hook it up to the new monitor, get all the files I need from it off, call it good and innagurate the new beast =)

This new one kicks ass. Made sure I got the CD/DVD-WR features and accompaning sound system. Yes, this is very important to my schooling, I'm sure of it. It's the "So Stephanie doesn't go insane" feature.

Now I'm pondering a cable modem or DSL . . . Anyone out there try both and have an opinion? Or just tried one and thought it was the bomb?

I'm a dsler ... but like the other person mentioned you have to make sure it's available because you have to be so many feet away from the telephone company.

I've had no real problems. When the connection isn't up (which is rare), turning the modem off and on usually does the trick.

I know nothing of cable modems. They work. But I hear if everyone in your neighborhood had it and gets online around the same time your speed drops significantly.

In any case it will be hella faster than dial up.

Hm, yeah, I'm starting to hear negatives on cable. So I think I'll check into the DSL stuff a little more before taking the plunge. Thanks! =)

Replying here to save time - yeah what the above poster said is true. The more people in your area that get cable modems, the slower your overall connection becomes. The flip side though is that cable can be more stable than DSL and, in theory, faster (meaning that if you remove the obstacle of everybody else clogging the pipeline, in theory you get a faster connection than DSL). Again it depends on who's offering DSL in your area.

Since for you it'd be Qwest, I dunno if I'd trust them ;) But people in your area who have tried both would know better.
