We have a proclivity toward living our lives by committee. How many of us watch TV and believe the ads that try to convince us that something in our lives is wrong; that we need something to improve us. How many of us hear someone at work saying "You know what you need?" or "You know what you should do?" and we listen and believe. How many of our friends are actually committee life planning members? How many people daily do we audition for committee member try outs? Who are our real friends and who are committee members?

It's recently dawned on me that I pay closer attention to what others feel I need in my life than I thought. I can hear myself saying "Yeah, I should really think about getting that, or doing something about this, or eating more of that and cutting my hair like them . . ." Now I'm wondeing why I do that.

And these are little more than obsticles to what I actually want in life. I don't want much. I like to live simply. I want to work a relatively stress free job, have a few bottles of wine in my house at any given time, access to the History Channel and the Food Network, decent clothing, shoes that aren't ratty, a little bit of time and money to travel, a dog that loves me and a place to call home with friends and family. That's it. And when I unnecessarily complicate my life, I make these simple things almost impossible.

An instructor I like once said, find out the things in life you really want. Write what you want down. Then write down the things in life you currently use or have that are in the way of the things you really want. Eliminate those things from your life. Don't listen to the committee. You'll be surprised how much easier what you really want will come to you. Most people never take the time to think about what it is that they really want. It's too depressing to see what you want and be miles away from actually having it. But the people that take charge of their own lives and forget the committee, these people actualize their dreams. It's not easy, it's hard work. But once you have it, it's yours.

So here's to eliminating obsticles and going for the dream . . .
