catscradle Nov. 5th, 2002 10:41 am)Well, it's election day in the US, a day when apathy springs eternal. Not that I blame most people these days. I mean, what did the 2000 elections teach us, but that our votes don't count so much. . . at least not when it's close.
Still, I'd like to believe we won't see the Florida scene re-enacted for us again. I don't believe it, but I'd liked to. So for that reason, I'm gonna give democracy another try.
Or I'd like to, but it seems because I've moved again - apparently to another district - I'm off limits to vote. Partly my fault for the mindslip of forgetting to register earlier, but partly the fault of the state of Colorado who told me that even 3 days before the last official day to register that it would never be processed in time. I guess after I register they need to send out a confirmation and then I need to verify it and all that would take too long. Huh? What the hell is wrong with Colorado? In Ohio, I registered. End of story. No ordeal. Took a week to get a confirmation back and that was that. I didn't need to do anything else. Here? Well, it seems to involve blood sacrifice rituals. I'm not the only one with these problems. 4 other people in my office at work seem to be experiencing the same thing.
Whatever. In the next week or so I'm heading down to the DMV to re-register and change party afiliation. I'm jumping the Ship O' Democrats and going Green.
Why Green? Why make my vote not count at all? Well, I've decided that there really isn't a difference between the Dems and the GOP at all. Dems are slightly more charming. But one may smile and smile and be a villian and all that. I've wised up. There is no party for the 90% working class in the US in the current bi-party system. They're all commercially owned. So they all need thrown out.
I don't even consider this a risk vote - not when there's nothing to lose with what we currently have. That's the freedom of being at rock bottom - things can't get worse - go with your conscience.
So from here on out, I'm Green.

I feel the same way! Last year, when I moved and had to change my driver's license, I re-registered Libertarian. This morning, I voted every for every third party I could, just to shake up the numbers a little bit. I'm working on converting all my friends to some kind of third party, and have so far gotten my husband to switch to Independent.
BTW, here in Florida, they've given up on high tech voting. We're apparantly too stupid for anything but a VERY large print ballot with VERY large oval bubble right next to names, and a sharpie marker.

Granted we are in political hell at the moment. And the Governor's race here sucks. You have the current idiot ... er I mean incumbant (I loved the ad campaign on tv ... Rick Perry ... You didn't vote for him. You don't have to keep him). And Tony Sanchez isn't much better. I don't think Sanchez will win Texas is mostly Republican except for where I live. But I'm hoping the other seats will see change.
