Beta Reader Appreciation Day (BRAD - October 13, 2000) questionnaire

Who was your first beta?

I think my first betas were [livejournal.com profile] mickanick, [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen and JoAnne, though I've not a clue who came first. The first years is a bit of a blur to me.

What was the story and fandom?

In Death's Dream Kingdom, VC

Are you still writing in that fandom?

Off and on. It's been a year, but you never know when a bunny will bite.

Which beta(s) had the most impact on your writing?

[livejournal.com profile] damoyre. I don't know what I'd do without her as a beta. I can't count on her to be frank if something in the story doesn't click right and to tell me what she thinks works. She puts up with a lot of crap from me. . .

What is your favorite story or series of what you've written?

I think my favorite story is Devil's Minion in VC

Why?

I recenty reread that one and the writing in the last few chapters just flows. I don't think I"ve ever been that in tune with a character before.

Who was the beta?

[livejournal.com profile] damoyre

What are your next two favorite stories or series of what you've written?

Misted Moon and Winding Down the Day

Why?

They may not be great, but I think they have that certain something that makes a story worth reading.

Who was/were the beta(s)?

[livejournal.com profile] damoyre and [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen

Who beta-ed your most recent story?

[livejournal.com profile] damoyre

What do you consider the most important quality in a beta reader?

Constructive criticism. It doesn't help if you tell the author it doesn't work and not tell them why. It's also good to tell the author what *does* work and why - you need both to understand how to deal with revisions.

What do you consider the most important thing to be accomplished in a beta read?

Of course there are the spelling/grammar corrections - but more than that a beta has saved me from posting stories with unnecessary or unclear scenes that either needed tossed or revised

How has your writing changed from your first stories?

I now write coherent stories with a bit of structure. The ideas are more developed and I've stopped dropping anvils on my reader *g*

What do you attribute that to?

I think this is mostly due to the fact that I kept writing, practicing and listening to what others had to say - even took a few classes - my beta helped, most definately - she let me know when I was falling into those traps or when something I was writing didn't have that spark that made it worth reading.
