So yesterday after I posted my upbeat positive post on how Tuesday was just full of awesomey goodness, I received an e-mail, not a call, not a letter, that I did not get the job. Which I thought was pretty shitty, but that is a sign of living in the post-modern age and I accept that. So I wrote back a nice polite letter thanking them for their time and whatnot, then asked a few questions regarding what I could have done to improve for the next time I interview. Now remember, they told me Tuesday that I was the bomb and did great and all - so color me confused.

Here's the thing - they hired within. No shock since they took less than a full day to make their decision. I did everything right, even had more experience. But! I did not know the college like the internal candidate did. And this is what burns me about higher education politics. They must interview a certain amount of people or they get busted by feds. So they call in all these people they have no intention of hiring because the decision has already been made. So basically they just waste everyone's time when we could be doing something more productive, like interviewing with people that are actually searching for an employee.

I don't really mind that they want to hire within, I just hate the dishonesty of it. If they want to push people up the ladder, then by all means - just let them do it and stop the fucking farce!

Well, that's fine. It would have been a latteral move if I got the job anyway. I have a few other job potentials out there including the adjunct teaching job - so I'm not destroyed by this, just annoyed.

Just have to keep chanting "The job I am seeking is seeking me..."

ARGH! Hiring from within is so frustrating. That's what happened with me and the WWE job. The worst was that they didn't make the decision quickly, so I was on hold for months thinking I was a shoo-in.

I'm finding that the long wait is also more and more common. It's a big tell-tale sign that this is an employer's market if they can wait that long and still think the candidate is going to be there 3 months later. Unfortunately, it's usually true. What scares me is that we've been in an employer's market for a long time now and I'm starting to wonder if we're seeing the trickle down effect of the out-sourcing movement. =P

I've been looking since SEPTEMBER. God this job market sucks. (As do my recruiters - the only interviews I've ever gotten I got myself)

*HUG*

Yeah, I've been looking for about a year on and off, but became fully committed to a search in January. It's murder out there. It took me 18 months to get out of my last job into this shit job.

I was going to ask you if you thought the recruiters were any help - but I guess not. Are you paying them or do they only get commission when you get a job?

Recruiters in your field might be different. But AFAIK they get paid by the company doing the hiring, not by the hirees. I didn't have to pay any of the companies I signed up with. Though so far I've gotten what I've paid for, sadly ;)

OTOH my brothers always used to use recruiters, so I guess it's just the luck of whether or not you get a good one.

I hope they have surveys to rate your recruiters or something to give feed back on them. I'm getting tired of the irony that slackers are getting paid more than people willing to do actual work. But it seems in this world doing slipshod work gets you promoted.

Good luck on the job Friday :)

Thanks! I'm trying to force myself to take it easy tonight so I can be relaxed and ready for tomorrow.

On the upside having an answering machine at work means you don't have to get up early to say you're coming in sick 8)

Academia is a snakepit of evil. I'm sorry it had to bite you like this. ::hugs::

Thanks :) And though it's true, I think the corporate world is, like, the total giant anaconda pit. So it's a matter of how much evil you can deal with in a daily basis. This world is sucking more and more each day. I'm banging my head trying to figure out a way to live in it without selling my soul.

I hear ya...I've been battling with that one for twenty years, myself...

Oh, they shouldn't do that! I've seen it done here, not for academia, but for administrative personnel.

Yeah, they don't tend to hire within if you're going for faculty because they want fresh ideas and consider it academically incestual to hire their own students - unless it's just for first level undergrad stuff. But it seems for administrative staff positions they mostly hire within the school. Go figure. =P

Eeek. Sorry, babe! :(

Otoh! The job you're seeking is seeking you... and it's located in the East Coast! Preferably driving distance from Philly. No lie! ;)

HA! Hmmm... but if you plan to move out west, and I end up moving to the east cost... wouldn't that be hilarious? *g*
