A rant.

All the past week at work I've gotten calls from people pissed off that they can't register for winter classes till the 18th. I had one student thank me for my "non-help" and hang up on me because I couldn't squeeze her in ahead of time. Even if I was so inclined to do that for her, the system wouldn't allow me in.

Also had people calling the wrong department and getting pissed I couldn't help them - on top of that, getting pissed that I would dare tranfer them to somebody that could help them. Why don't I have all the answers? Why can't registration help people with parking issues?

One man called wanted info on our open-house speaker - so I tell him the topic she's going to speak on and he's all pissed off I gave him the same information on the website. Well, I never met the woman, all I know is what the topic and overview tell me - the man wanted a blow-by-blow of the speech. When I offer to transfer him to the event coordinator he blows up at me for not being properly informed. Never mind that I knew the date of the event, the time the speaker was presenting, what her topic was and an overview on it, and offered to register him for it - which was all I was required to do - nope, I was ill informed. So I finally got snarky and told him "Not being Nancy Smith, I don't know exactly what she's going to say. It's a free event with free food, go and find out." After that, he still registered. I've noticed that when I get snarky, then tend to back down. . .

To top it off, I've got the adjunct faculty all in a tiff because they can't be bothered to learn the new online system for looking up class info and grading. They're pissed I can't do it for them. Now, they all received a packet to show them how the new system works. They got this last spring - they wait till now when grades are due to tell us they don't know how to do it so we'll just have to do it for them. Well no, no we don't. And we can't. Classes are password protected by the instructors - they're the only ones that can get in. Besides, do you want anyone on staff able to get in and change grades? Half of us take classes ourselves.

I tried to explain to one instructor how to get into the system and do the grades - she got pissed and called my boss - told her I refused to help her (re: do it for her). She then got pissed at my boss that she wasn't going to do it for her either.

What the hell is wrong with people? Where does this feeling of entitlement come from? Give me what I want now or I'll make you feel like shit! Where is this coming from? Why does no one feel they have to do anything - that life gets handed to them or someone else isn't doing their job?
