So the day started off with a snotty chick yelling at me because the office didn't send the paper work her professor needed for her independent study class. I have her folder here and I'm looking at said paper work as I write this now. Dated April 24th and signed by both her professor and the academic director and - get this - her. Dipshits should not be allowed to run amok.
I took the woman's health survey, sponsered by Ohio State University - I guess I should be proud of my home state. And by the way, Columbus, where the majority of Ohio State is located, has the largest growing gay/lesbian/bi community in the country. Or at least it did five years ago. I'm not sure of the stats now.
I've seen the health care system on all sides. I've seen it before the HMOs took over. I've seen what it turned into after the HMOs took over. I've existed both with it and without it. For the record, out health care system with the new HMO, PPOs and whatnot suck pretty bad. They pretty much allocate medical care based on your coverage. Even if your company give ya health care coverage, certain tests and procedures can be denied based on the type of coverage you have. They don't tell you that of course, the doctor simply doesn't order the tests or tell you that you need them.
That all said, a little health coverage is better than none. And I luckily have the type of coverage that I can up by taking a little more out of my paycheck if I need to - but not everyone can do that.
When I lived in New Orleans there wasn't a single company that offered coverage to the average employee that wasn't in a management position. 40 hours is considered full time, so they'd work you 38 hours and not worry about your health one little bit. In order for me to get any medical care I was forced to quit my job before I went into emergency, so I wouldn't have to pay for it. Total cost of that visit was nearly 5000 dollars. If I kept my job, I'd have to pay for the whole thing myself - and thats if they'd even take me in. If they didn't deem it a life threatening emergency, they could have denied me based solely on my lack of insurance. Without coverage they'd only take me in if I was dirt poor. So, basically people are penalized for not being rich or poor. We have a system that almost dictates that people not have a job if they want their health needs taken care of.
Luckily I had a boss that let me quit and hired me back after all was said and done. Then I got a second job that allowed me to afford purchasing my own insurance. Hundred bucks a month and I had to go somewhere else for dental. Living in New Orleans on about 1000 bucks a month, it was a serious drain. And btw, when I signed up for health insuracne I never put that emergency visit down on the application - they could have denied me coverage based on previous conditions. Luckily, there's no record of me being in the hospital. The system is THAT screwed up.
Now I do have complete coverage, I live in Colorado and work at a good job. I'm in the process finding a new doctor. It won't be painless, but it will be a LOT better than what I've had for the past 5 years. Anyway, here's the Women's Health survey:
