I was talking to ari about the possibility of this one day and lo and behold, it has become true. CNN had a report on the controversy surrounding the making of a miniseries on Hitler. Of course, our conversation was more to the point of a movie highlighting Hitler and Eva's love life in much the same way there have been miniseries on Napoleon and Josephine, but I thought the timing was rather amusing. I'd be curious as to why this movie is controversial - a movie looking at the rise to power of a tyrant isn't exactly groundbreaking, it's been done before. And as the report notes, with so many movies out there on the Holocaust, why is this subject any more or less touchy? I suppose it depends on how the subject matter is handled, but the article makes it look as though the point of the movie is to document Hitler's rise to power - which frankly is aired at least once a week on the History Channel in one form or another.
Any of you folks old enough to remember an afterschool special called The Wave? Well, I got major flashbacks to it when I discovered this website early this morning for George II's new Citizen Corps. You too, can turn in your neighbors and have a BBQ block party to celebrate it! Yes folks, McCarthyism hasn't died, it just smells funny.

The auxillary brigade can be found here: USA on Watch

I feel safer already.

As an aside, The Wave was released in 1981 and has been a cherrished afterschool special for 20 years now. The only one worth watching. Ever. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Children's show.

To top off the news, it looks like my former congressman of the 17th district of Ohio is finally going to pay the piper. Jim Trafficant stands accused of accepting bribes, fraud and tax evasion. Way to go, Jimbo. I was close friends with his daughter, whom I still adore, and I STILL hope this guy goes to jail. He's a menace tot he community, even though they keep voting him back in office year after year. Tell them what they want to hear and they'll follow you off a cliff. He plans to run for the House again even if he's in prison. Sad thing is, he'll probably win.
A friend just sent this article from Zmag to me on the current administrations regard for American higher education institutions. Apparently, someone ain't happy that the college communities don't blindly follow their leaders off a cliff.

Maybe they're right. The chair of my department once said when asked if it was okay to make fun of our political leaders - "Well, the only alternative is to follow them." And who wants that?
