Mom called today and out of the blue started ranting about the Pope. We're talking serious ranting. She asked me if I thought he might be the Antichrist, and she was totally serious. Benedict always freaked me out with his eyes. There's something totally demonic about them, so I thought on this a moment. But no, I don't think he's the Antichrist. I think when he was still John Paul's aid he was more like a Grima Wormtongue. You have this ailing, hunched over JPII with Ratzinberg whispering in his ear all these lies and shifting the Church into ultra conservatism. I can see it. Okay, yes, JPII had his issues, but he didn't tend to burn the bridges with other religions. He made it a point to reach out and establish ties across the faiths.
Still, I don't think Benedict is the Antichrist. I think Bush fits the bill a little better - but it's still hard to imagine the Antichrist as a total moron. I saw an ad in the paper the other day on how the Mark of the Beast was going to be made mandatory soon, and to call this number to find out how to avoid getting it. Maybe I should call. Sounds like they know what's going down and could point me in the direction of the real McCoy.
But seriously, mom's call was a bit of a surprise. Mom's a devote Catholic, she doesn't Pope bash. When he was elected and I was bitching about it, she told me to just wait and see. Well, she waited and saw and now she's bitching. I feel a little hope. If my mom and dad are both looking at the world and what our leaders are doing and they're getting pissed off, I wonder how many others are doing the same. They can't be the only ones out there doing an about-face.
Mom also mentioned that the Mosque in her area is holding an open house for people to see what their religion is about. She said she may go to it! Color me pleasantly surprised :)
