So I was called into my supervisor's office today to have a "little talk." Sounded ominous. I was worried she wanted to talk about the "little talk" we had two weeks ago about me looking for a new job. She was cool with that and understanded that my financial situation dictated that I needed to look for a job that could pay me more. Our rocky past history aside, she was willing to work with me and said she'd give me a good reference - especially since I kicked ass on taking on all the new jobs since last March.
Well, today she told me that she talked to the deans and got them to approve a promotion for me *AND* a raise (there have been a few people here that got promotions but no raise, so this is huge). If that weren't stunning enough, she told me that she knew it wasn't going to be enough to keep me here, but said she knew I deserved it and that the promotion would look great on a resumé. She wanted me to have the promotion and raise because she knew I probably wouldn't be here in time to get the merit raise (January), and this was more than I could get on the merit raise anyway. Wow. I was speechless. In my department where we have no money for anything, they actually recognized my work. With cash, no less. This will give me about $170 more a month, which, you know, I'll take.
I'm still looking for a new job, but this will give me a little breathing room. Plus if I get an offer for something I'm not sure I want, I won't feel so obliged to take it just because it offers a bit more money.
At least for now things are looking a little better :)

I keep trying to remember why I became an academic. Surely to God it's not because of the money. ;-)

Congratulations on the much deserved reward for your hard work. I'm assuming that if you stick around till January you'll take the merit pay raise on top?

(I'm shocked that your boss is actually being so "nice". Though it's probably because she doesn't wanna lose you. ^_~)
Luv ya!
