So I watched Kerry's speech last night at the Democratic National Convention. I was impressed. I didn't think Kerry could impress me, but he did. So props where props are due. He's been paying attention and that will make the difference as to whether people are casting a vote for in favor of him or in opposition to Bush. I'd certainly like to cast my vote on a positive note.

In 2000 we had an election that was so close because there wasn't a real difference between the candidates. You had Gore agreeing with about 80% of the stuff Bush believed. So toss a coin. Now we have a polarization of the parties. Kerry is tauting a message radically opposed to Bush. There's a difference on everything from foreign policy to economics and issues of civil liberties. Kerry would have to really biff in some scandal involving Iraqi prostitutes working illegally on his personal house staff to lose the election. That or Bush would have to cancel elections for some made up fear he's created.

I liked what he's saying in terms of economy and healthcare. Hell, I practically cried at the healthcare stuff, but it's an issue that is really hitting at me right now. Nothing makes me more emotional than the belief that one day everyone will be eligible for it. But then I remember that Clinton failed us on that issue. Clinton failed in many ways and I'm not optimistic that Kerry will do better. But I do believe we have a better shot at it with Kerry than Bush. And I do believe that Kerry will actually help the economy. But it will take the people to push Kerry and make sure he delivers. Bush is in the pocket of big business. So was Clinton, though in a way we might not have noticed as dramaticlly. It's hard to believe that Kerry could have possibly escaped having loyalties to big business. Just how deep remains to be seen. So we need to keep on it. Hopefully Kerry understands that the people are on to the corporate angle. And hopefully the people aren't complacent enough to let it go if Kerry fails in that understanding should we decide to give him the job.

Nothing much was stated on Iraq, and I think he was very deliberate about that. He voted for it and we can't really back out of this war very easily. "Oops. Sorry. Didn't mean to do that, we'll be leaving now..." We can't. It's a mess now and pulling out willy-nilly isn't an option. Perhaps moving towards a legitimate Iraqi government and making reparations for all the damage we've done might help. But Jesus, where do you being? I envy no one inheriting the great Bush legacy.
