Today I've read many posts and articles that smack of rampant paranoia and general cohesion meltdown. From LJ comments to world news, the world seems to have gone completle off it's axis. But I looked out the window and everything actually seems rather calm and still rotating correctly. So try not to worry or fret, it's not that bad, really. I mean it. When monkeys wept in carpools up the flower pot tango wench.
Meanwhile, my good friend and expatriate, Peteris is going on an axis of evil trip. Why? Because he says Latvia is gloomy and depressing this time of year and he hears the axis of evil is nice. So he'll be going to Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iran for a few weeks. I told him he left out North Korea, but he says he doesn't really want to go there.
Here's some pictures of the hotel he will stay at in Damascus: Pictures of Al Haramain, Damascus, Syria
He claims he's staying at a dyke hotel in Ephesus called Artemis House for $7 dollars a night. The one is Damascus is $4 a night. In contrast, western hotels cost anywhere from $200-$400 dollars a night so that westerners can have the luxury of avoiding life.
So Peteris is spending less than $21 dollars a day, minus extras he might buy. I can't help but think Ford Prefect would be very proud.
And now it's time for News from the Past Coming Back to Haunt Us
Click here to see Donald Rumsfeld shake hands with Saddam Hussein. No, he's not welcoming the newly captured man into hell. This is from December 20th, 1983, back when we were great friends with him and supplying him with all the stuff he needed to kill a great many people. Read the article.
Want to see a list of all the US corporations that helped to keep Saddam in charge? Here are a few of them:
AT&T, Bechtel, Caterpillar, Dow Chemical, Dupont, Kodak, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM. For a moment I thought Semenex was on the list, but it was actually just Semetex. How's THAT for a Feudian slip of the mind? Shut up, I know at least five of you get that joke.
Read the whole article, there are some interesting facts there and all well documented.
