Today I am doing my impression of the fish mouth. I've spoken of incompetence of the academic directors before, but I must admit, there are things not even I expected from them. Our director of the computer info systems program has fucked up in ways that are actually difficult to fuck up in. I mean, you have to work hard to fuck up this bad. It's sort of like ruining a pot of boiling water or a tray of ice. You have to add your own vile of toxic waste if you want to ruin it.
And he managed to do that. We had an online class we were offering. Only three people signed up for the course. A student called him and asked if it was still going to run. He told them "Absolutely. I garantee you that we will run this course." The very next day he cancelled the class. Never mind that it's still too soon to cancel anything. Classes don't start till January 5th. But he cancelled it. Then he calls us and tells us to call the students to let them know it's cancelled. So my co-worker calls and gets reamed a new one by these students that are furious. She then calls the director and asks why he garanteed a class to students when he planned to cancel it. He tells her to call them back and tell them the class will run.
Here's where it gets good.
He decides that one of our instructors he's not bothered to contact is going to teach the class. This instructor has told him in the past that he will not teach that class online. Ever. Don't bother him about it. So today we get a call from this instructor, who is mad as all hell, in a blind rage that our director has pushed this class on him. Then the director tells him that if he doesn't want to teach the class, he can call the students @_@ Instructors are never allowed to cancel classes and call students. They can quit, but it's up to us to cancel the class if we can't find an instructor to replace them.
So now they've decided to cancel the class once and for all. My boss has just informed the director that he must call all the students and explain it himself. Not my office and not the instructor - him. Then she gave him, again, a complete list of all the policies and procedures and numbers to call if he gets confused by anything. Again.
He comes over to my desk later and has me look up student's numbers and e-mails for him. Now all faculty and staff have access to this information, he didn't need me to do this. He tells me he doesn't know how to access the information. So I get it for him and then hand him a faculty and staff pamphlet on how to access student information. And let him know it was the same one I gave him a month ago and the month before that. And then I gave him the link to how to access this information online if he loses this paper again.
None of this stuff is difficult. And I want to know why the hell I'm getting paid about 40K less than this man, whose managed to fuck up his job so badly, the program is failing to the point of nearly being shut down.
In good news, I got my pre-ordered RotK tickets! Can't wait till next week =)

But idiot directors? Yeah, seen some of those. I'm happy to say that in my current (soon to be former) job, the top man in our dept. is sublimely competent, but at my last job, total ditz was in charge. You know, the kind who think *they* are doing all the hard work of running stuff, going to meetings, when in fact they have no clue what's even going on at times! I don't expect a boss to do the same work as the employeers, but a boss needs to understanding the workings and realize that w/o the employees, he has no friggin' job.

I *want* to be a director!! If I can make as much money as they do, hell, I'll be a fucking moron! I have plenty of confidence that I can do that... with some effort, but I can get it down. =)
