I've been pretty much ignoring the California re-call election stuff, as I find it a farce in democracy. I'm all for getting rid of a bad politician in office, and lets face it, Gray Davis was indeed bad. And it's too bad we can't do a re-call for the 2000 presidental election, but this case has been so mismanaged that it seems little more than a ruse to get a republican in the governor's seat. Serious cadidates are being ignored in favor of people like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Debate questions were being given to candidates ahead of time so they could prepare their answers, and many candidates weren't even being invited. Arianna Huffington just dropped out of the race because she could no longe cope with idiocy that rivaled Gray Davis' governence.
So beyond pop-up headlines, I didn't pay attention. Afterall, I'm not from California, so why should I care? Well, I went to Democracy Now and came across this article. Be afraid:
Democracy Now: The Terminator As Predator? A Look at Arnold on Sex, Abuse, Drugs, & Women
In addition to the hate group involvement and sexual harrassment issues, there is the ominous overtones of Schwarzenegger being used by the republicans to help carry the state for them in the 2004 presidential elections.
There's also some stuff on Maria Shriver that will just leave you thinking "WTF woman!?"

Trivia: Schwarzenegger means "Black Plowman" in German.

I knew that from an ancient David Letterman episode, back when he was still with NBC. *g*
Dave: So tell me about the Kennedys.
Arnold: What do you want to know about them?
Dave: Well, how do they feel about having a black plowman in the family?
And yeah - some of our laws do have perks. There will be no Kissingers and Schwarzeneggers in the oval office.

I'm sure that the news we get here are highly biased, given that there's a lot of pride about the fact that "one of our boys" is meddling in American politics. But even with the glorified picture painted, I still don't get it how anyone can actually vote for him. Hardly anybody here understands it, and we're supposed to like the guy.
Are the alternatives truly that bad that nobody wants to consider them?

No, there are actually some good ones out there. Or were, at least. I know a few just dropped out recently, like Arianna Huffington. The media will only pay attention to four of the candidates and have effectively squashed a lot of promising people. But the current Lt. Governor has actually pulled ahead of Schwarzenegger in the polls - something like 35% to Schwarzenegger'a 22%. Apparently the Hispanic community is up in arms over Schwarzenegger's part in the US English group (supports the use of only English in the US and is associated with several hate-groups here). Schwarzenegger dropped from 45% to 22% in the polls and that's being credited for his decline.
Unfortunately one of the republican's just dropped out and his 6% is believed to be going to Schwarzenegger, so he's still very much alive in the election.
