Some quotes:
So many of these holidays, MLK, Veterin's Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day. . . I saw them as a day off work with out stopping to think what they really meant. So now I'm stopping to look.
We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people.
Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.
Nothing pains some people more than having to think.
We must combine the toughness of the serpent with the softness of the dove, a tough mind and a tender heart.
Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: -- we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.
Martin Luther King Jr.

MLK
Since I live in Atlanta, MLK and his life and message is pretty much present all year round, part of the fabric of this city. His tomb is a mile from where I'm sitting right now and I'm sure the entire MLK Historic District is teaming with crowds this very moment. This morning was the Commemorative Service over at Ebenezer Baptist Church, as well as the annual march. I've biked by the house where he was born many times. He's pervasive.
My representative in Congress is John Lewis, a peer of MLKs and one of the Freedom Riders and one of those who was beaten bloody in Montgomery. He and three other Civil Rights Era figures were featured in yesterday's paper having a round-table discussion about those times -- and these times as well -- and it makes for some interesting reading.
On a somewhat related note, it just occured to me that it's interesting that two of the pretty much most revered, respected and loved native sons of this state are MLK and Jimmy Carter, both of whom were/are peace advocates.
