I got a call yesterday from a frantic mom because her son got a D in one class this quarter and his father was going to pull him out of school. I wasn't able to talk to her about anything, as it's against federal law unless the student signs a waiver - so today a frantic student stopped by with a waiver and begged me to talk to his parents.

This was a first.

I dug up all the info on the student and found he's actually a really good student and all his teachers love him and his work. His problem is that he's such a perfectionist that he sometimes misses his deadlines because he will not turn in a project that doesn't meet his standards. He gets down graded for not meeting the deadlines. And mind you, this isn't always the case as he has a good GPA. All he really needs to learn is that he can turn in a project that is less than perfect. It's the nature of the film/video indusry that you turn in projects that usually need further work. The instructors here know that. If the students turn in projects on time, they always have the option of improving the work throughout the quarter.

So I had to convince dad that the student was an excellent student and to pull him out of a program he loves because of one D was probably not going to do the student any favors in the long run. In fact, it could ruin he shot of a dream career. Or more to the point - he'd actually be able to make money and pay dad back, versus working crappy video detail where he'll have to struggle just to make his essential bills. That seemed to wake dad up. I saved the student!

It's funny that I have parents demanding that we keep their kid in school when they're struggling to make a 1.5 GPA and have no clue of what they're doing and don't want to do it anyway. And then we have parents ready to yank their kids out for the smallest infraction. Personally at the college level, I'd prefer not to deal with any parent, but in these times, it's not an option. I just wish the over reactionaries could step back and take a good look at what they're doing to their children with their unrealistic demands. I'm just happy I could help a student get through it.

I'm so glad you were able to convince that. It's doing little things like this that make a job like yours worth it! I remember that when I was doing financial aid and totally hated it my life! it would be the one or two students I was able to help that totally made a difference in my attitude towards the job.

I am just glad that there are teachers like you who are there to help students out when they have problems. Being a parent, for me, this is very comforting to know.

You said it right, BRAVO!
