Snickers pulls plug on Super Bowl smooch ad
Masterfoods kills ad that showed two men 'kissing' after objections by gay rights groups.

"We know that humor is highly subjective and understand that some people may have found the ad offensive. Clearly that was not our intent," Masterfoods said in a statement. "As with all of our Snickers advertising, our goal was to capture the attention of our core Snickers consumer."

Apparently their target audience consists of really dumb mechanics. That's quite a niche market for a Superbowl commercial.

Honestly I don't believe it promotes violence against gays so much as how damaging sugar is to the brain. Does anyone out there want to emulate these two men? Do you think that the next time there's a hate crime in the news that the suspects are going to point to this commercial as what put them up to it? That the commercial is stupid is a given, but I think sometimes groups like GLAAD and HRC underscore the wrong causes and that leads to backlash against the gay community. I'd be more pissed off by this commercial if I were a mechanic.

FWIW it wasn't just the ad that aired that got HRC et al. up in arms. If you went to the website to look at the alternate endings one option involved one of the guys responding by hitting the other with a wrench, and one guy smashing the other's guy face into the engine of the car and slamming the hood down on him. All the while you saw clips of NFL players watching the commercial and making disgusted faces while saying things like "Oooh, that's not right." in response to the guys kissing but not to the violence.

Which isn't to say that I've suddenly developed a love for GLAAD nor will I anytime soon, but you get a better idea of why they were twitchy about the ads being homophobic.

Ah, okay. Yeah, I can get why that would be a twitchy thing. I admittedly did not see the alternate endings on the website. Given that though, I still think mechanics should unite and protest.
