So I was having sharp pains around the stomach area on the left side for the past few days. I finally decided I should probably go to the doctor for this (which I totally didn't want to do as I depise all things Kaiser and I get my old doctor back in October when my insurance kicks in from my new job). After the doc probed a bit and ran some tests, he diagnosised me with diverticulitis. That's a six syllable disease, my friend. Yeah, its caused by the inflamation of the diverticula. I didn't know I had a diverticula, but apparently we all do and mine's inflamed and/or infected. But I caught it before it got too super horrible bad. There's no high fever or internal bleeding, so he gave me two antibiotics and told me to come back if the pain doesn't go away after about 5 days.

So I looked up causes to this disease and found out that it generally developes as a result of a low fiber diet and things like nuts, seeds and popcorn hauls getting caught in the diverticula (I'm having a fun time saying this word). Well, I think I eat plenty of veggies, but having celiac, I can't eat most whole grains of anything save brown rice. Looked up some celiac sites and found that diverticulitis is a common complication of celiac. Yay.

Oh well. Pass the broccoli please...

I didn't know I have a diverticula either...

Sounds complicated. Take care.

Thanks :) Though they said I caught it before it got too bad, so hopefully there will be no more complications :)

Ugh, that sucks! At least you caught it early. Sounds like it could've gotten very painful or exploded or something, if you'd waited longer to have it checked. Best wishes the treatment works.

Yeah, it could have been a lot worse. If it gets too bad, apparently you need hospitalized and possible surgery =P So I'm glad I was finally talked into going to the doctors.

Thanks :)

Oh, poor baby!!! ::hugs:: It sounds nasty. Take care of you.

I'm lactose intolerant and have IBS - not even close to what you're going through, and I won't pretend to understand, but I'll keep a good thought for you.

Thanks :)

Honestly I think IBS is worse, as it's an on going thing you always have to look out for. Celiac is like that in terms of maintainence, but I think IBS has more immediate nasty implications that are just ~bleh~

You know that humans were not meant to drink milk pased the age of 8, right? For people that continue to drink it regularly, a big percentage of them become lactose intolerant by age 30. In the past few years I've really noticed how bad I feel whenever I eat foods with milk in it. I've switched to a low sugar vanilla soy milk to drink and cook with. I find I like it a lot more too. Of course it's not substitute for ice cream, which will always be my downfall *g*

My mother had diverticulitis. Please, please be very careful with it.

Oo. I hope she didn't have any of the more nasty complications! I'm trying to take care of myself by taking the antibiotics and resting. Thanks :)
