Well I can talk about the debate, or I can talk about Lost

Okay, I liked this episode quite a bit. My theory that they're in some freak bermuda trianglish/Philidelphia Experiment/X-filesish bizzaro vortex weirdness and they're creating their own reality seems more founded now than ever.

Locke - kept me going "What? No.... wait...no... wait...HA!" I actually love the angle of him being a gamer stuck in a suck job with a jerk boss. I can identify. I'm sure a few of us can. He's smart, disatisfied with what life has to offer and looking for something more. Unfortunately, Locke verges on the edge of merging his alter identities with his real self. He's a bit unhinged.

Great twist at the end when we discover he's a parapalegic prior to the crash. We understand his desparation a bit more now. But now he's out there hunting wild boar. He's managed to totally become what he formerly pretended to be. He's got no real reason to ever want to get off the island when his wildest fantasies have been granted.

Prediction: Locke's going to sabatoge any attempt they make to leave that island. There's also now the question of what Locke saw in the forest. We're led to believe by the look in his eye and next week's preview that he may have seen the Big Bad that's been terrorizing everyone. It obviously didn't kill him, so he's got a secret of the island now. Will he share it? I think he'll try to get everyone to follow him and end up polarizing the survivors.

Now for a while I thought there had to be a connection to Locke and the 17th Century British philosopher John Locke, especially when you have episodes entitled Tabula Rasa and all that. And now we finally caught that Locke's first name is, indeed, John. There's certainly a connection in that Locke, possibly more than most of them by coming to this island, is a "blank slate" and starting fresh. He certainly can go in a number of directions. The philosopher also rejects the Divine Right of Kings and while our Locke wasn't suffering unde a king, much of his fate was being dictated by his physical circumstances and by his asshole boss and mundane exsistence he strived so hard to get away from. But while Locke seems enlightened in some ways, he also seems, well, psycho insane in others. I forsee darkness in Locke, and if that's the case, I think we have have a walking irony on our hands (giving up one form of oppressive destiny for another). His fascination with the island's Big Bad can also be seen as embracing, at least nominally, Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan (rival contemporary of John Locke) - that can get interesting...

Sawyer - To Jack when Jack suggested that it might be Sawyer rummaging through the fuselage: "I'm right behind you, jackass!" Thank you. Just, thank you.

Jack - Okay, he's was pinging "CLUE PHONE, CLUE PHONE" the whole episode. His unease with the ceromony for the dead and looking after the well being of others in a more supportive kinda a way, in conjuction with his little line about being born into his profession of a doctor because of his family.... I'm starting to think the theory some have proposed on various discussion groups and LJs that Jack is not a doctor might be true.

Prediction: He's either in the mafia, a member of the clergy (Protestant), or a mortician. I don't think he's in the mafia, so one of the last two. Always wanted to be a doctor, but was pressured to persue the family line. He wakes up on the island and now he's a doctor (if Locke can walk and hunt boar, why can't Jack be a doctor?). Maybe he had some med school, as he seems to know at least a little of what he's doing, but I'm betting he never finished. Also might be why he made that stupid comment to Freckles last week that he didn't want to know what she did to warrent being arrested by a US Marshal. Also might explain why he was okay with killing the marshal when the damage went WAY beyond what he could do to help the guy.

Charlie - Okay, I want Shannon dead. NO ONE treats Dom-- I mean Charlie, that way! But it was funny to see him fishing with Hurley. I also think Charlie's DTs are creating the Big Bad in the forest.

Walt - seems to have created the polar bear after seeing it in the spanish comic and he made the rain stop when his dad said he'd go look for the dog after the rain stopped.

Hurley - so thoroughly decent, normal and cool I think he has the biggest secret of all. I bet he speaks 12 languages, only weighs 140 pounds and knows how to kill a guy 101 different ways. Just you all wait....

Lost and The Stand

I like what you said - especially about Saywer. Heero!Jack needs a foil like Sawyer. At first I thought that would be Charlie's job, but he's going in a different direction altogether.

If Lost is truly based on a combination of Steven King's "The Stand" and Star Trek's "Shore Leave", we can make several assumptions.

In the Stand there is an apocolypse followed by the survivors splitting into two camps - one good but flawed, one bad but arrogent. The "good" characters were Stu, Glenn, Frannie, Nick, Larry, Tom and Ralph (and various others) led by Mother Abigale (ultimate good). The "bad" characters were Nadine, Harold, Lloyd, Trashcan Man and various others led by Randall Flagg (Ultimate evil).

So far the characters that have been identified are: Locke = Randall Flagg. Walt is potentially Mother Abigale. Charlie = Larry. Jack = Stu. Claire = Frannie. I strongly suspect that Hurley may be Harold, but that's unconfirmed. That leaves Sawyer and Sayid and Kate - they can go either way. It would be interesting though to turn Kate into Nadine, but I'm assuming Shannon will get that role. Oh yeah, and Boone and Michael. My assumption currently is that Boone is Nick Andros. It's not an exact match by any means - that's just how I see it shaping up (though Locke and Charlie are canon). Most notibly we lack a Tom Cullen, which is a real shame but there's no way he'd survive the island I suppose. Unless... like Locke, one of the survivors was retarded until he woke up on the island and could think clearly. But that's seriously pushing it.

Wow. I just thought of this. Ok, I'm definitely putting my money that Shannon is Nadine because Larry and Nadine had a potential relationship - until Nadine betrayed Larry.

the tie in to "Shore Leave" is this - in that episode whatever the crew imagined became real. That is the ultimate secret to the island. I'm not sure what the key is, but what you imagine becomes real. So far Walt has done it twice, 1st to mainfest the polar bear he saw in a comic book, and 2nd to stop the rain so his father could search for his missing dog. It will be interesting to see who else has this power, or if it's just limited to the two principles of Walt and Locke.

As for Locke walking, that's a fantastic observation. Why would he want off the island when it grants all his wishes? This leads to the logical conclusion of the polarization of the camp. And as Locke is strong and established himself as the hunter, I assume that many will wish to follow him (as opposed to someone like Kate = vegitarian).

Another thing to consider about Charlie. He's based on Larry Underwood, who was a no account rock star at the beginning of the book (also with a drug habit). But by the end of the novel it is Larry who, through strength of will, courage and tremendous self sacrifice, confronts and defeats ultimate evil. It is Larry (along with Ralph) who makes the "Stand" of the novel's title (and we discover that his only album was entitled "Pocket Savior").

Thinking further, I'm betting Sayid is Glenn. Glenn was a former professer and when the going got tough he came up with all the clever answers. He was one of the ones to ultimately confront Flagg, attempting but failing to make the last critical Stand. But that's just my theory - I've nothing to support it.

The goodies are so much easier to predict than the baddies! But that's why I think Hurley is going to go evil/Harold. He's the least likely and hardest to predict. However, Harold's motivation was clear - he wanted Frannie and was denied. But then again, Hurley has been spending a lot of time with Claire. If she develops a relationship with, say, Charlie (remember last week?), that could be the key to sending Hurley toward Locke.

Ok, enough speculation for now. I can't wait to see more of this show!

Another LOST convert!

I had channel-surfed right past "Lost" one night until the husband mentioned that he wanted to watch it - I didn't even know he was a fan, the evil little bugger. So I watched it last night - WHOA! (to summon up a 90's "Blossom" moment) So totally freakishly good! Another show to add to my list of must-see tv, along with eternal Buffy reruns and Stargate: SG-1.

I'm with you: I'm thinking the island is a cross between Bermuda Triangle and some remnant of the Philadelphia Experiment.

Dom is God. I mean, Charlie is God. And I love Hurley. What a doll.

Wonder if we'll get to see Dom - I mean Charlie - surfing?

Hmmmmm... (happy fantasies)

Re: Another LOST convert!

*LOL* I heard that Dom's been surfing in Hawaii on breaks, and hates it! He said it's alright if you don't mind getting bonked on the head with 50 boards. It would be fantastic to see though...

Re: Another LOST convert!

I keep thinking about him and Billy and Elijah and the rest of them all surfing in NZ when they were filming LOTR. LOL - too cute. :)

Re: Another LOST convert!

Yeah, Lost is really a welcome addition. There's so much mundane TV, I stayed away from it for a number of years. I want fantastical, weirdo programs to watch. Something with a little imagination that isn't geared toward the 15-25 age set.

Dom is a beautiful man, in so many ways. I just saw a clip ABC did of him on his love of bugs. He goes to bed early so the lizards can have his couch. I love this man.

I would like to see all the hobbitses surfing. Word has it that much of the LotR people are making their to Hawaii for New Years - I'm hoping lots of pictures are taken... *g*
