Sending out comfort vibes for those caught in the path of Hurricane Ivan. Still have a few friends living there and I hope they have safe shelter. I was living in New Orleans in 1998 when tropical storm Frances flooded us and Hurricane Georges shut the city down. I've never had nerves wracked as much as waiting that out. It was a level 2 hurricane. As much as my roommates and I had fun on that adventure, somewhere in the back of my mind I was scared shitless. We got hit with the western side of Georges and escaped major damage while Mobile was crushed. Downed powerlines and trees was the extent, no major damage for us.

Ivan scares the hell out of me.

Reports coming in: All bridges and roads out of New Orleans are closed now. If you didn't get out already, it's not going to happen.

If you're interested, some of the cams are still up. Last I look Streetcar and Bead Cam were still running. I think Burbo Cam and Karaoke Cam are down:

I read they were going to open the Superdome, maybe, as a shelter of last resort, but nothing else. They hoped that would encourage people to get the hell out of the city, if there was no shelter or if the shelters had no aminities. I have visions of people chewing through the astroturf...

They opened the Superdome up as a shelter for Georges while we lived down there. The looting was amazing, although I don't recall any damage to the astroturf. *g* Cameras caught people carrying out sofas and barstools and anything else that wasn't nailed down once the curfew was lifted. Amazing.

Burbocam gives this message:

NOTE: BOURBOCAM'S WINDOW HAS BEEN BOARDED UP FOR HURRICANE IVAN. HENCE THE LACK OF A VIEW.

Eeps!
