Saw Return of the King last night. Had a great crowd of people. Saw a few that were dressed as Hobbits. Very cute.
I've never been so exhausted in all my life coming home from a movie. I felt as though I've been through one of the battles. But it was worth it. This was by far, the best of the trilogy. Everything was wonderful start to finish.
I must admit, I wasn't very concerned over Aragorn. I wanted to jump to all the other scenes. For the Return of the King, ironically, it was all the other characters that captured my attention more in this one.
Merry and Pippin were wonderful. And I much appreciated their screen time - they had much more to do than in TTT. I didn't much mind that they didn't grow, like in the book - I think it worked out okay.
Merry with Eowyn was nicely done. I think I love her more for taking Merry with her than for her big scene with the ring wraith. Way to go girl.
Pippin and Gandalf were great together. I love that despite his irritation, Gandalf tried to set Pippin at ease. Putting his hand on Pippin's shoulder when the green flaming tower shot off in the distance almost help calm me down as well. And then Gandalf explaining the afterlife to Pippin was a great kindness considering death was at the door.
I also loved Pippin singing for Gondor'spsycho stewart. What a beautiful scene. I was worried he'd have to actually do something henious while in service to Gondor, so it was nice when he was released of his promise.
Gollum - not so sympathetic here as in TTT. It was very nice to see pre-ring Smeagol though. There is something completely adorable about the way he says "hobbitses" despite his schizophrenic, homocidal tendencies. He and Sam played very well off of each other. Damn, he's a tough little critter to kill, ain't he?
Sam was very much on the edge in this movie. I can't say I blame the guy, can't be easy coping with an insane Gollum he knows it out to kill them and a Frodo who seems blind to it all. I've always thought that Sam was the real hero of this story. He keeps Frodo going when all Frodo wants to do is lie down and die. How many times would Frodo be dead were it not for Sam? It's nice to see he properly rewarded for all his efforts. And Sean Austin - I love you. You are forgiven for The Goonies now.
Frodo. Jesus. How much can one endure and then return to pick up the threads of a former life, indeed! Throughout the movie I kept thinking "How the hell is he going to go on if he makes it through this?" If only Tolkien could have given him Sam at the end. Damn our homophobic culture.
The Shelob scenes scared the hell out of me. Especially when Frodo got caught in that web. Then when it was creeping behind him and acting all aggressively spidery? I damn near pulled out my rosary to pray it for Frodo. Tolkien was a Catholic, I'm sure he'd approve. Thank God Sam's not an arachnaphobe, because I couldn't have touched Frodo when he was all wrapped up in the web. Well, maybe I'd find the courage, but it'd take me a lot longer to do it.
Did Frodo look like an angel when he woke up in that bed or what? And that smile he gave when he went off with Gandalf? Beautiful. I adore this boy. Elijah was amazing throughout this trilogy.
Great movie. Tiring movie. I will see this about 10 times before it leaves theaters.
