People, please - and I mean this as a friend - stop. Just stop. It's not cool. I've seen a LOT of people in the fandoms being just generally nasty to newbies who write to them with questions or comments. There's no excuse for that. Unless the person in question is insulting or just plain nasty themselves, try to be just a little courteous. If you don't want to answer them, then either ignore the letter or point them in the direction of someone more in the position to help.
And why would you make fun of them to the rest of us because this person wasn't born with an innate sense on how the fandom works? Stop showing how stupid you yourself are by blabbing on to your friends how stupid they are. We were all newbies at one point, people. We either lucked out on getting in on the ground level, or found a nice group of friends to point the way. Don't chase a new soul off in the name of your "Bad Ass" reputation. The truly cool people in the fandom make fun of people like you - and believe me, you deserve it.
And while I'm ranting. . .
