We're about an hour from Bush's deadline and war with Iraq. I've spent the past few months in opposition to this eventuality and now that it's finally here, I don't really know what to say that won't sound trite in the face of those that will die.

I'm sorry. I don't approve of what the United States is about to do. I will continue to voice my opposition and do my part to bring about an end to it.

My friend in Latvia wrote to me today with this greeting, "Hello, denizen of fascist imperialist pigland." He meant it as a joke, but I couldn't help feeling a sense of sadness. According to him, the anti-Americanism in Europe right now is huge. We're doing bad things, yes, I understand this, but apparently in his neck of the woods, nothing American can be good. And it's very sad that this picture of us has been painted. When even those of us that stand against this war and this president are branded as bad because of where we happen to be born, then the hatred is blind and nothing good ever comes from that.

We will have to work very hard to repair the damage of this administration. It is, in fact, our duty as world citizens to show that we respect other nations and wish to live in peace with them.

Hmmm... the hatred towards Bush is high indeed; understandably, if you take into consideration how much European countries have suffered from Hitler, an analogue of whom is seemingly ruling US at the moment. I don't think the 'anti-American' feelings are directed towards citizen as much as towards the governmental machine.

Yet, I have to admit that to most people, it appears as if the vast majority of American citizen back up Bush in this war. I don't know if this is true or not, because the last poll I saw was a couple of months ago, when the war-supporters were 'only' 53%. I can only be glad that I have friends online who appear unspoiled from the virus 'the solution to the problems caused by 11/9 is starting a war in Iraq'. I can understand how simple people can be manipulated to think like that, but not how intelligent people have succumbed to this parody of logic.
