Fanfic writer's survey:

1. What fandoms have you written in?

VampChron, DS9, Batman, Gundam Wing and a brief foray into Buffy

2. Which fandom(s) do you think are your strongest? Why?

I think my writing is equal in VampChron and Gundam Wing these days, but I write more GW currently because the characters are speaking louder. I guess I chose these fandoms because I like to write about ideas over plot. These two series have high concept ideas that lend themselves well to writing about ideas and character studies (though both are good for plot driven stories as well)

3. Which fandom(s) do you think you're not as strong in? Why?

I'd like to be stronger in Buffy, but I've not had the chance to see all the episodes. Also I feel that this series is far more plot than idea oriented, so I might not be that great at writing fics for it.

4. What fandom(s) do you wish you could write in? Why?

I don't. If I like the fandom and feel I could write the fics, then I do. I like a lot of shows that I just don't get into in terms of their fandoms.

5. In your opinion (as opposed to what you get told in feedback) what are your strengths as a writer?

I think my stengths are characterizations and writing around ideas. A skill I think I developed in the past year is blocking - or body language to get across points rather than explaining things. I'm much better now at eliminating unnecessary expedition.

6. In your opinion, what are your weaknesses?

Plot. I cannot write plot intensive stories. I can't write epics worth shit. I've thought up a few that I think someone with better skills could write a kickass fic with - but that person is not me.

Sometimes I get so into an idea that I can't let it go whether it's a good idea or not. I get stuck trying to work out the kinks to the story and it just won't budge. I'll have to let those stories sit for a couple of month before I pick them back up, crumple them, toss them aside and then rewrite the whole thing. But I have to go through this time where I don't look at it for months before my mind clears.

7. Have you ever gotten feedback about either your strengths or weaknesses that you disagreed with?

Yes. I had someone recently tell me my characterization was off in all my stories. I wrote back and asked them if they could explain it more, but the best they could tell me was that it wasn't what they expected based on all the other fanfic they've read - they never saw the series. It's lesson to watch who you listen to when you get feedback. People who haven't seen the show and base things off of fanon have no clue of what they're talking about in terms of canon and characterization.

Another perosn told me I was such a great writer it was a shame I didn't write more sex-scenes - Ironically, I think that I don't usually write them is a strength of mine. I don't write PWPs and I don't like sex thrown in the story for the hell of it. If it doesn't fit the story at hand, I don't want to see it. Into the Dust Descend is the only fic I've written has an actual sex scene and it's important to the plot - it's also one of my most hated stories with the readers because it pairs a villian with a main character and it's exploitive in nature. It's not two hot guys getting it on, but rather a political power play. I think it's decent. There are a few problems with the fic, but no one has mentioned them to me - the only mail I get on this is "ICK! THAT WAS DISGUSTING?" I appreciate the articulate replies.

8. Overall, what's the worst piece you've ever written? (Meaning you look back on it now and cringe, not a piece you deliberately wrote to be badfic)

Stone of Night (VampChron). I don't even have a copy of it anymore. I hate that fic with passion. It's SO bad that I would not consider it an insult if people used it as a "FOR GOD'S SAKE DO NOT DO THIS!" lesson. I made all the newbie mistakes with this one, and I wasn't even a newbie - there were about 5 fics before that one - none of them really serious, but still. . .

9. Overall, what's the story(ies) that you're proudest of?

In VampChron it's Devil's Minion. It's not complete, but it's my best VC story ever. I hope to get back to that one soon. In Gundam Wing I have two: Misted Moon and Winding Down the Day.
