My wonderful students this quarter have decided to come see me one by one and bitch about the fact they must take general education classes for their BAs in art. I advise for the film and video production deparment - so I tell them that English Comp classes are a good thing for, like, oh, say, writing a script. Also for pitching a proposal and communicating things we like to call words and ideas. I'm much nicer when I say this, by the way. I don't tell them, for example, that they all write like 2nd grade illiterates. Unfortunately they do. Of the appeal letters that have crossed my desk over the past year there is only one student that I didn't hand back the letter with tons of corrections and tell him he had to re-write it. It's very time consuming. I wouldn't ask them to do that if their intention was made clear (even if the grammar sucked), but usually you can't tell what they're appealing based on the letter. So yeah, go to English Comp.
And then there's the pissy attitude about the History of Media and Mass Communication class they added last quarter to the curriculum. Um... don't need to know the history of your own freaking field? It's not just one or two - it's about 60% of them.
There is a real soul sucking, gigantically enormous, disconnect between students today and history that's starting to freak me out. I have Sgt Pepper playing now and so far three students said, "That's awesome! What group is that?" HA! What group is that. Jesus. I mean, even if you never heard that particular album most people recognize the sound of the Beatles when they hear them.
