Went to the doctor's on tuesday with a painful hacking cough and congestion. What a surprise, I have bronchitis with a sinus infection. Again. I switched doctors, and I'm happy I did that, as I think I truly love this one. She's pretty amazing. Despite the fact that my hand writing was illegible on the medical history form, she was able to make out most of it and actually discussed the whole of it with me.
On the illness front, she said those who had the flu that went around in Novemeber and December seem to be staying sick. Whatever was in that bug wrecked the immune system of a lot of people. It's a very bad season for cold and flu. So, I'm on an antibiotic again. Which I hate because they're so hard on the body, but not much choice there. And she gave me this super intense decongestant. I've seriously never taken anything that worked this well before. On the downside, it's a souped up version of sudafed, so it causes the heart to race. Despite the codine laced cough syrup, I've not slept in two days now. I think the bronchitis/sinus infection is ebbing, but fuck, I'm exhausted. So no work. Good thing I don't give a rat's ass about my boss and what she thinks anymore.
Actually, on Tuesday there was a coup at work and I ceased being responsible for my medical life. My co-workers forced me to call the doctor or be dragged there kicking and screaming. My choice. They love me.
Doctor also brought up the celiac with me. Wanted to know if I was sticking to the non-gluten diet. I sheepishly told her no, and she was nice enough to say that she realizes how hard that diet is to stick to. But she also told me I need to get back on it because the gluten is going to make me feel sick. And that's true enough, I do feel much better off the stuff. But when you really stop and look at the list of foods off limits - I'm telling you, you don't realize how much of what we consume is laced with the stuff. I think there are only two ice creams mass marketed that don't list it as an ingredient. No wheat bread, no pasta, nothing breaded, no colas, no easy to make boxed foods (like cheesy broccoli rice), no oatmeal because it's shipped with wheat and gets contaminated, No chinese with MSG, etc, ect . . . Oh, and because the person with celiac syndrome doesn't digest food well - no fatty foods. Skim or 0% fat milk. Only lean meats. This puts food prep time much longer for me - how do you work full time and do school stuff and have time to do this every day? I don't know. I've not been so successful with it since I moved to Denver. New Orleans was easy. I had less money for food, so rice was the big staple. And it's NOLA, so lots of broiled seafood and salads combined with walking everywhere made me far more healthy and fit. But, I'm not there now, so must make do. . .
On the good side, if I can stick to the diet, the weight I gained since moving here should drop off. With a little exercise added. And it might also boost my immune system. One can hope.
So I've been gluten free for 2 whole days. This is day 3. Gonna try for the week and then go from there - one day at a time.
