We got the Colorado blue book the other day that goes over all the ballot issues for the 2006 election. Reading over it, I think they should used the issues in the analytic section of the GRE. Then instead of the test just being a huge money making scam, students can at least figure out how they're going to vote in the next election. But then I guess they don't really want us using our analytic skills to find all the holes in the issues and candidate platforms.

Speaking of the GRE, I'm pulling an all out effort to study for it every day until November 4th. My goal is to totally kickass on the verbal and analytic and to not totally suck on the quantitative. Math and I just don't mix well - so I bought a book that garantees me I'll lift my math score even if I'm a total math moron.

I've picked out five schools I'm going to send my scores to, but I think I've made up my mind on where I want to go. I'm looking at CU Boulder's Ph.D. program in Philosophy as my first choice. I checked out their student placement after graduation and student publications - they're one of the best schools in the country for philosophy. They also support their Ph.D students. If you get accepted you're garanteed 5 years of aid that you do not have to pay back. 11K stipend per year and TA/Teaching positions. Not bad. Economically it would be a lot easier for me than picking up and moving anywhere else. The Denver-Boulder commute isn't that bad. They have buses running all hours and may have a lightrail between the two soon. So all is good.

Now I have to call Carl and ask for a recommendation. I look forward to this with all the anticipation of getting a root canal. I've no fears for my other two recs, but I have this feeling I'll have to deal with a smartass comment from Carl. Ah well. I know he'll write the recommendation and make it good. It benefits the school to have their students go on to Ph.D. programs.

Since I've decided to do this I've had a sense of peace about me. I feel I finally have direction. If I totally fuck up the GRE I'll toss the scores, take a GRE class and apply the next year. It's all good as long as there's a goal.
